Functions of the department

The three main functions of the department are: Training, Service and Research.

Training: The Department is involved in training of various categories of staff and students from within and outside the community. The majority of them are the medical students (undergraduates), resident doctors and house officers, medical officers from other centres, resident doctors from other departments like Community Health and Family Medicine, as well as Community Health Officers; this is done by teaching during ward rounds, clinics, theatre sessions, daily clinical meetings and weekly departmental meetings.

Services: The Department offers various services, comprising of emergencies and electives; in attempting to optimally meet the needs of the almost 10,000 (Ten Thousand) women seen at the various service points of the Department. The major services rendered include:
  1. Emergency Care: The gynaecology emergency and labour wards take care of cases of hemorrhage, convulsions, abortion, sepsis and complicated deliveries;
  2. Antenatal Care: To monitor and plan delivery of both normal and complicated cases;
  3. Gynaecology Clinic: Cases of infertility, amenorrhea, carcinomas, infections, menstrual abnormalities, among others are seen and managed;
  4. Theatre Services: Offer both major and minor gynaecological and obstetric surgeries;
  5. Delivery: The labour ward is equipped with six (6) delivery beds, and admits booked and un-booked, as well as normal and complicated cases. It has the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) adjoined to it.
  6. Family Planning: All modern forms of contraception services are offered by the department, inclusive of surgical methods;
  7. Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV: This is done in conjunction with APIN (AIDS Prevention Initiative in Nigeria). Antiretroviral drugs and elective caeserean sections are offered in the department.
  8. Cervical Screening and Management of Cancer Cases; among others.

Research: The Department conducts research at all the service points, evaluating various things inclusive of rates, knowledge, attitude and practice studies, as well as collation of data from various service points.
